It develops a miniature, depressed-globular stem growing only 3–5 cm high and up to 4 cm wide. The epidermis features a matte, pale grey to greenish-brown hue adorned with prominent, pyramidal tubercles arranged in tight spirals.

Each areole bears 2 to 3 unusual, soft, corky spines. The lower spine is the longest (up to 1 cm) and curves upward over the crown, turning grey-brown with a dark, blackened tip. The spines feature unique horizontal cracks (transverse fissures).

Despite its tiny size, it is a highly willing bloomer that can flower when little more than 1 cm in diameter. Funnel-shaped, ivory-white flowers emerge from a woolly apex, showcasing contrasting dark brown or magenta midribs along the petals.

 It develops a thick underground taproot that acts as a water reservoir and anchors the plant firmly into loose rock.
