The plant features a swollen, water-storing, turnip-shaped or sub-spherical tuber. This pale-brown caudex can grow up to 10–15 cm long and about 10 cm in diameter, allowing it to survive harsh, drought-prone environments.
It produces several erect or ascending annual herbaceous stems that reach up to 20–30 cm in height. Its opposite, slightly fleshy leaves are elongated and covered in tiny grey glands, often exuding a soap-like mucilage when crushed.
Requires an exceptionally well-draining, gritty soil mix.
