Caudiciform succulent shrub native to the arid subtropical biomes spanning from southern Namibia to the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.
It is a slow-growing winter-grower that forms a massive, swollen underground tuber or partially exposed woody caudex that stores water.
True to its name "zonale", its rounded, lobed green leaves feature a distinctly dark, horseshoe-shaped pigmentation zone across the surface.
It is not a very floriferous plant, producing sporadic flowers. When it blooms, the flowers feature white petals marked with prominent pink or reddish streaks.
