Strictly winter-growing and summer-dormant. The foliage awakens with autumn drop in temperatures, grows vigorously during winter, and dries out completely by late spring. Flowers bloom out of the dry soil in early summer after the leaves are fully withered.

Provide thorough waterings in autumn and winter, allowing the pot to dry out moderately between intervals. Because the leaves are exceptionally soft and hairy, high humidity or water trapped on the foliage can cause rapid fungal rot. Stop watering entirely when the leaves die back for summer.

Place in a bright greenhouse or a sunny windowsill receiving maximum light. Intense light keeps the leaf rosettes tight to the ground and accentuates the red eye-markings on the flowers.
