Below the surface sits a turnip-shaped root tuber up to 3.5 cm in diameter. The tuber is covered in a thin, flaking periderm and can occasionally sprout more than one growing point.

Above ground, the entire plant is amazingly compact, reaching only 6 to 15 cm in height. The simple, oval-to-heart-shaped leaves are grey-green, prostrate against the soil surface, and densely covered in sticky, long and short glandular hairs.

In early spring (September to October), it pushes up an unbranched stalk bearing dense, umbrella-like clusters of 10 to 28 flowers. The five petals are a soft cream-white color. The posterior two petals curve gracefully backward and are painted with striking, dark pink-to-crimson spots and veins at their claws.
