Requires maximum bright, direct sun during the winter vegetative period. Insufficient light will cause the dense leaf rosettes to elongate, weaken, and stretch.
Water moderately in winter when leaves are actively growing, allowing the grit to dry out fully between sessions. Gradually phase out water as leaves yellow in spring, and stop watering entirely during summer dormancy. Wet soil in summer will cause the underground tuber to rot and disintegrate.
Demands an exceptionally porous, coarse, mineral-heavy soil mix. Combine pumice, perlite, and coarse sand with only a tiny fraction of organic matter.
Highly adapted to nutrient-deficient quartz and granite soils; avoid heavy fertilizers or rich soils as it leads to weak, gangly growth.
Must be overwintered in a frost-free location or kept inside a temperature-controlled greenhouse.
