It forms a fleshy, turnip-shaped underground tuber that can grow up to 5 cm in diameter.
The compound green leaves grow 10–23 cm high, are covered in long appressed stiff hairs, and bear a striking resemblance to carrot or Bubon leaves.
Blossoms emerge early in the season (August to October). The delicate flowers range from pure white to pale pink, with the upper two petals showcasing distinct red or magenta nectar guides to attract pollinators.
This is a strict winter-grower. It wakes up and produces leaves in late autumn, blooms in late winter/early spring, and goes completely dormant during the summer.
Provide a highly mineral, well-draining medium. A mix of clayish loam, coarse river sand, and perlite mimics its native semi-desert habitat. Use a deep pot to accommodate the elongated tuber.
