Compact Caudex: It grows as a miniature, globose shrub, rarely exceeding 50–100 cm (20–40 inches) in height. The trunk swells dramatically into a smooth, grey-green, pear-shaped water reservoir.
Spines & Foliage: The branches are armed with short, pairs of broad-based, conical spines. Its leaves are thick, leathery, and bright green with a distinct pale midrib, clustered densely at the tips of the branches.
Substrate Mix: Requires an exceptionally free-draining, mineral-heavy soil mix. Combine 70% gritty material (pumice, perlite, and coarse sand) with 30% organic compost.
Intense Lighting: It thrives in full, direct sun to partial shade. High light intensity is crucial to keep the plant compact, maintain short spines, and prevent the stems from stretching.
