Porosity First Substrate: Provide a highly draining, loose mineral medium. A blend of 70% to 80% grit (pumice, perlite, lava rock, and coarse sand) mixed with 20% to 30% organic cactus compost keeps the root zone well-oxygenated.
Blasting Sunlight: It demands full, direct, unobstructed sunlight. If grown indoors, a bright south-facing windowsill or strong specialized LED grow lights are required to maintain its compact, heavily armored look and trigger its famous, heavy blooming cycles.
The Soak-and-Dry Cycle: Water the plant copiously during its hot spring and summer active growing phase, but always allow the entire pot to dry out completely to the bottom before watering again.
