It features thick, 4- to 5-angled, grey-green succulent stems that grow from a woody underground tuber (caudex). In its natural habitat, it forms a sparsely branched shrub reaching up to 1.5 meters in height.

The plant produces large, fleshy, oval leaves with prominent pale veining and jagged margins. The top of the leaf is soft green, while the underside features an intense, highly ornamental reddish-purple hue and a heavily spined main rib. These leaves are ephemeral and naturally shed during the winter dormant season.

It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or intense filtered sun. Too much deep shade will cause the stems to stretch, weaken, and become highly susceptible to rot.

Follow a strict "soak and dry" routine. Water thoroughly during the active spring and summer growing period, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely before watering again.
