True to the classic Massonia growth habit, it produces exactly two broad, fleshy leaves that lie completely flat, face-up against the soil surface.

The leaf surfaces are highly distinctive, covered in prominent, raised pustules (bumps). In select clonal forms, each pustule is uniquely topped with a single long, fine hair.

In early winter, it pushes up a dense, head-like, nearly stemless cluster of flowers nestled perfectly in the center of the leaf pair. The flowers sport elongated, erect stamens that resemble a miniature shaving brush or paintbrush, typically showing off blue, purple, or creamy-white pollen.
