It develops an immense, striking fountain crown consisting of 50 to 120 keeled, dull-textured, silvery-blue to blue-green leaves. Individual fronds reach lengths of 1.5 to 2.2 meters and arch steeply downward.

Stems grow exceptionally slowly (roughly 1 cm per year) but can eventually reach a stocky 3 meters tall and up to 80 cm in diameter. Some ancient individuals in the wild are estimated to be between 300 and 500 years old.

Requires full sun to achieve its maximum silvery-blue coloration. It easily tolerates extreme summer heat wave temperatures exceeding 45°C (113°F).
