Filtered bright shade or indirect light. Variegated tissue burns easily under direct afternoon sun, while low light will cause the deep Japanese color tones to fade to a dull green.
A highly gritty, mineral-heavy substrate is mandatory. A mix composed of 80% inorganic matter (pumice, akadama, and perlite) mixed with 20% organic peat keeps its fragile roots well-aerated.
Water thoroughly only when the substrate has gone entirely dry. Give it a slight reduction in water during the absolute peak of summer heat and cold winter months when growth naturally slows down.
