The plant produces 3 to 12 strap-shaped, linear leaves that display a characteristic loose spiral twist at the apex. The entire leaf surface is cloaked in velvety, white T-shaped hairs.
Like all kukumakrankas, it is a winter grower. It drops its leaves at the end of the rainy season (spring), and the mildly scented white-to-pink star-shaped flowers emerge rapidly from bare soil around mid-summer. Mass flowering is often synchronized by rapid changes in barometric pressure.
Substrate: Demands an exceptionally well-draining, gritty medium. A mix dominated by coarse quartz sand, pumice, and minimal loam or clay mimics its native Cape habitats.
Watering Cycle: Strict winter-watering regimen is required. Begin watering carefully in late autumn when the leaves sprout. Keep the soil lightly moist through winter, and cease watering entirely in summer when the plant goes dormant to prevent bulb rot.
Light & Temperature: Needs full sun to partial bright light. High sun exposure ensures the leaves retain their tight, ornamental curls and dense hairiness. Protect from hard freezing temperatures.
