Trunk & Anatomy: The central trunk is a massive, flexible, resinous water reservoir that can grow up to 15–20 meters (50 to 65 feet) tall. It is thickest at the base and tapers toward the top. As the plant ages, the trunks often bend into looping, arches or split into bizarre, multi-headed forks.
Secondary Branches: The main trunk is covered in a dense brush of tiny, pencil-thin, horizontal twigs. These twigs produce sharp spines and short-lived leaves.
Winter-Growing Growth Cycle: Unlike many desert plants, the Boojum is winter-active. It opportunistically pushes out small, oval, bright green leaves after late autumn and winter rains, staying active through spring, and going completely dormant during the blistering heat of late summer.
Creamy Flowers: Mature specimens (usually over 25–50 years old) bloom in late summer. They produce dense, brush-like clusters of honey-scented, creamy-yellow flowers at the very tip of the main trunk.
