It forms tight, neat hemispherical mounds up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall and 12 inches (30 cm) wide by sending out multiple offsets from its base.

The chubby green stems feature 12 to 16 prominent ribs lined with harmless, soft, conical bumps (tubercles) that end in a soft, thread-like point.

The foliage remains a rich green under standard conditions, but intense light or sun stress triggers beautiful brownish-purple or reddish-green hues.

 In spring and autumn, it produces clusters of tiny, subtle yellow-green flowers called cyathia directly from the stem tips.
