Growth Cycle: This is a strict winter grower. The foliage emerges during late autumn/winter, and the plant dies back to its underground tuber during hot summer months.
The Flowers: Interestingly, it blooms during its summer dormancy before the new winter leaves appear. It shoots up a slender, spike-like stalk bearing tiny, delicate white-to-yellowish star-shaped flowers.
Soil: Use an exceptionally sharp, well-draining mineral mix. Combine 70% pumice or coarse quartz sand with 30% sandy loam to mimic its native clayish, rocky soils.
Watering: Water regularly but lightly in winter while the leaf is actively growing. Stop watering completely in the summer once the leaf goes yellow and dry. Overwatering a dormant tuber causes instant root rot.
