Requires abundant bright, indirect light or full morning sun. In hotter inland climates, provide light afternoon shade to prevent the foliage from scorching.
When planting, always set the rosette at a slanted 45-degree angle or tuck it vertically between rocks. This mimics its natural cliffside habitat and prevents water from pooling in the center of the rosette, which causes instant crown rot.
Water moderately during the winter and spring growing seasons, letting the soil dry out significantly. Restrict watering to an absolute minimum in summer. A light splash once a month is plenty; overwatering a dormant Dudleya in warm summer soil is the fastest way to kill it.
Demands an incredibly sharp, fast-draining mineral potting mix. Combine 70% coarse sand, pumice, perlite, or decomposed granite grit with 30% organic potting soil.
Exceptionally cold-hardy compared to southern hemisphere succulents. It can safely tolerate winter freezes down to 15°F to 20°F (-9°C to -6°C) if the soil is kept bone-dry.
