• Substrate: Plant in a highly porous, sharply draining medium. A blend of 70% coarse sand, fine grit, or pumice with 30% organic clay loam mimics its native rocky, grassland habitat.
• Light & Heat: Requires full sun to very bright light. Its minimal leaf surface area functions like tiny solar panels; it needs high light intensity to thrive and maintain its compact structure.
• Watering Regime: Water moderately during its active leaf-growing cycle. Once the foliage begins to yellow and die back for its seasonal rest, reduce watering significantly, allowing the soil to stay mostly dry to avoid root and scale rot.
• Sowing Seeds: Sow seeds during the spring season when day-to-night temperature fluctuations vary by about 12°C. Scatter seeds thinly on a well-drained medium, cover with a very fine layer of sand, and keep damp. Germination takes roughly 3 to 6 weeks.
