Unlike miniatures that max out at a few centimeters, D. gigantea grows into a large, solitary, flattened-globose disc that can reach anywhere from 15 to 25+ cm in diameter.
It possesses prominent, tuberculate ribs lined with sharp, heavy, dark-colored spines that curve back slightly toward the body.
From this fuzzy crown, it pushes out relatively large, elegant, ** funnel-shaped white flowers**. These open strictly at night and release an incredibly rich, sweet perfume designed to attract nocturnal pollinators.
