A squat, dull-green, globose stem that grows 10–20 cm in diameter and 7–12 cm tall. It features about 20 spiraled ribs broken into nipple-like tubercles. 

It features 10 to 15 flexible, comb-like (pectinate) radial spines per areole. They are creamy-white or yellowish with dark tips, turning pale brown with age, and recurve backward to interlace tightly against the stem. It has no central spines.

At maturity, it develops a light-brown, woolly structure at its apex called a cephalium. Slender, white, heavily scented flowers up to 9 cm long emerge from this structure. Each flower blooms for only one night, opening after dark and wilting by morning.

Followed by flowering, it produces club-shaped, elongated red fruits about 2.5 cm long twice a year.
