Growing as a low, strongly flattened-globular cake, it reaches less than 7 cm tall and about 10–12 cm in diameter. Its skin remains a vibrant, bright green that matures into a deeper green over time.

It typically forms 13 to 15 low ribs lined with round, fuzzy areoles. 

 Each areole features 5 to 6 thick, pale gray or dark-tipped radial spines that curve backward toward the plant. The defining trait is its single lowest spine, which can grow up to 2.5 cm long, resembling a strong, flattened claw. Central spines are completely absent.

 On warm summer nights, massive, daisy-like white flowers erupt from the cephalium. They are incredibly fragrant to attract nighttime moth pollinators and wilt into mush by the following morning.
