It features a highly compact, flattened, disc-like or globular body that grows up to 5–9 cm in diameter. The skin (epidermis) typically ranges from a grayish-green tone to a deep, dark red or chocolate brown as the plant matures in bright light. 

Like all mature Discocactus species, it produces a specialized, fuzzy, cream-white woolly cap at its crown called a cephalium. Once this forms, the plant stops growing larger and focuses its energy on reproduction.

Out of this woolly cap, it buds large, elegantly long, white flowers. These flowers are heavily fragrant and open exclusively at night during the warm summer months. 

It possesses tiny, neat radial spines (usually around 7 per areole) that hug the ribs tightly, accentuating its symmetrical, geometric texture.
