• Light: Full sun to light shade. Full sun outdoors produces the most compact, beautifully silver-grey architectural crowns. If grown in partial shade, the foliage shifts to a deeper green.
• Soil: Requires an exceptionally fast-draining, mineral-based gritty soil mix. Excellent results are achieved by amending standard soil heavily with coarse sand, pumice, and perlite. It tolerates poor or alkaline soils well.
• Watering: Abide by a "deep but infrequent" watering strategy. Drench the soil thoroughly during the warm spring and summer months, but allow the substrate to dry out substantially before watering again. Drastically scale back watering in the winter to prevent root rot.
• Cold Hardiness: Remarkably cold-tolerant for a tropical cycad. Mature specimens handle brief temperature drops down to 10°F to 15°F (-9°C), though it will shed its leaves and behave as a deciduous plant if sustained temperatures drop below 20°F (-6°C).
