Prefers full sun to partial shade. While it grows well in bright, indirect light indoors, its purple-black camouflage patterns become much more vivid, dark, and pronounced when given access to direct morning sunlight or dappled outdoor sun.

Keep the soil consistently moist to wet. It loves water and is an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond margins, or water gardens where it can sit safely in up to 6 inches of standing water. If kept in a pot, never let the substrate dry out between waterings.

Requires a rich, fertile, humus-heavy soil medium. Because it grows rapidly and produces massive leaves, it is a heavy feeder; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks during the spring and summer growing season.
