In autumn (typically March to April), a short, thick flower stalk suddenly erupts straight out of the bare, dry earth. It produces a dense, perfectly spherical umbel containing 30 to 50 brilliant pink to crimson flowers etched with signature dark veins.
Once pollination ends, the entire giant seed head dries out, snaps completely free from the stalk, and rolls across the landscape like a tumbleweed to distribute its water-rich seeds via the wind.
Prefers light, filtered shade if grown in highly scorching, sunny zones.
