It is significantlysmaller than the standard Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus, rarely exceeding 1.2 to 2 inches (3–5 cm) in total diameter.
Features a highly flattened rosette of tightly packed, dark green triangular tubercles. Each tubercle has a distinct, woolly central groove running down its face.
Unlike the typical form which produces deep magenta flowers, var. macdowellii is celebrated for its striking pale pink, mauve, or completely white flowers that sprout from the woolly center during late autumn.
