Unlike standard trunk-forming or rosette aloes, the fleshy, swollen leaf bases of Aloe richardsiae merge underground to form a true, compact subterranean bulb up to 4 cm in diameter. This bulb is anchored by thick, fleshy, water-storing caudiciform roots.

It produces a loose rosette of 8 to 10 long, narrow, rubbery, linear green leaves up to 25 cm long that strongly mimic grass. The leaf margins are finely serrated with tiny, soft white teeth. Under intense light or drought stress, the foliage flushes a deep reddish-brown.

In the summer, an unbranched, upright flower spike emerges 35 to 45 cm tall, bearing tubular hanging flowers that range from soft yellow-orange to bright coral-scarlet.
