It is typically a stemless plant that forms a single, large rosette up to 3 feet (90 cm) wide. The leaves are a distinct silvery blue-gray or sea-green color, curving gracefully inward during dry periods.

Young plants are covered in sharp prickles on both sides of their leaves. As the plant matures, these surface prickles disappear, leaving behind just a single row of spines along the lower leaf surface and reddish-brown teeth along the margins.

Unlike most aloes that bloom in winter, Aloe reitzii blooms in late summer to autumn. It produces dramatic, bright red tubular flowers that angle downwards and mature to a beautiful lemon-yellow color at the tips. These flowers are a major magnet for sunbirds and bees.
