Forms tight, 10-inch-wide rosettes of narrow, recurved green leaves edged with soft teeth. Under drought or cold stress, the foliage blushes with distinctive red and bronze tones.

Produces unbranched flower stalks bearing light orange flowers. Unlike the parent species which blooms in late autumn or early winter, subsp. mzimnyati blooms later in the mid-to-late winter season.

Thrives in full sun to light, filtered shade. Full sun exposure is required to bring out its dramatic reddish stress coloration.

Must be potted in a gritty, highly porous cactus and succulent soil mix. It is prone to root rot if left in standing water or heavy, clay-rich soil.
