It forms dense, slow-growing clusters of erect, fleshy, elongated-obovate leaves that reach up to 10 cm in total height. The leaves feature a rough, textured, and finely warty epidermis, often with unique frilly leaf margins and a slight groove along the upper surface.
Depending on its environmental conditions, the foliage displays a striking, mottled palette ranging from olive green to dark purple patterns, intense red-brown spots, or warm beige tones when stressed by bright light.
Unlike many ultra-porous desert cacti, this plant prefers a sandy, well-draining organic medium. Its roots are highly fibrous and can fail in purely grit-heavy or completely soil-less mediums. Use a mix consisting of 50% quality cactus soil, 30% coarse river sand, and 20% pumice or perlite.
