Requires an incredibly open, loose potting medium. Mix 70% sharp mineral aggregate (fine pumice, granite grit, perlite, and coarse 3–4 mm gravel) with 30% organic cactus loam.

Handle the plant with extreme care during potting. The leaves are attached by tiny, brittle joints and drop off at the slightest bump. Always allow the plant to sit in bone-dry soil for a week after repotting to heal micro-tears in the roots before introducing water.

Water thoroughly from late autumn through spring, but only when the potting mix has entirely dried out. Provide continuous ventilation; stagnant moisture at night triggers root rot. During high summer heat, it rests; water minimally to prevent the leaves from shriveling.

: Demands maximum bright, indirect sunlight or direct morning sun. Bright, dry conditions combined with distinct day-night temperature differences cause the purple leopard-like spots and red leaf margins to become strikingly vivid.
