The name "Alveolatus" translates to "having cavities or channels". The thick, fleshy, sub-spherical leaves have a distinct warty, pitted, or honeycombed (alveolate) texture.

The foliage generally ranges from gray-green to a waxy grayish-brown. Under strong sunlight or cold stress, they can flush into beautiful shades of brownish-red or purplish-red.

It is a highly compact, dwarf plant reaching up to 15 cm (6 inches) in height. It branches from a thick, tuberous base.

In late summer or autumn, it sends up a slender, spike-like stalk bearing small, inconspicuous tubular flowers that are pale pinkish-green to white with purple margins.
