It produces small, distinctly golf-ball or teardrop-shaped leaves that taper to a sharp, narrow tip. The entire surface is covered in deep, brain-like wrinkles and warty fissures.
Under optimal conditions, the foliage is a rich, saturated burgundy-purple coated in a subtle, powdery glaucous bloom. New growth may emerge pale green or pinkish before deepening into its signature dark shade.
It is a miniature, slow-growing shrublet that rarely exceeds 4 inches (10 cm) in height. It forms dense clusters of highly fragile leaves that can detach easily if bumped.
