Is a slow-growing, highly ornamental dwarf succulent native to the arid Free State and Cape Provinces of South Africa. Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, this unique subshrub is prized for its fan-like, fleshy leaves covered in dramatic maroon mottled spots.
A miniature plant that grows into a small, clustered mound up to 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) tall.
The smooth, spade- or paddle-shaped leaves are gray-green to silvery, crowded tightly together. Both sides are heavily speckled with dark red, chocolate, or purple spots.
High light exposure intensifies the reddish-purple "calico" mottling and darkens the margins.
In summer, it sends up a tall, slender spike (up to 12 inches/30 cm) bearing small, unassuming, tube-shaped green flowers tipped with reddish-pink petals.
