It features thick, fleshy, semi-cylindrical leaves that are a pale silvery-grey or duck-egg blue-green color. The tips of the leaves often have slightly wavy or crinkled margins.

The leaf surfaces are naturally decorated with dark purple or burgundy-red blotches. These spots become significantly more vibrant when the plant is exposed to bright sunlight.

It is a slow-growing, compact plant that tops out at just 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) tall.

 In late spring and summer, it shoots up a surprisingly tall, erect spike bearing tiny, inconspicuous tubular flowers that are pale pinkish-white.
